DAVID ROCKWELL Lecture: “What if?” Rethinking the collective experience
Thursday, 5/14 from 3pm to 3:45pm
What if…? There’s a question that triggers fireworks of enthusiastic ideas. For the American architect David Rockwell, it has opened the door to a world of brilliant creations since 1984, when he founded the Rockwell Group in New York. His interdisciplinary architecture and design studio quickly developed outposts in Madrid and Shanghai, today staffed by 250 people. It draws its strength from a Rockwellian vision shaped by the bohemian childhood of its leader. Born to a mother who was a dancer, as a child he was shuttled between Mexico and the United States. Today, the designer is driven by the belief that all things are possible to those who know how to watch and play. His passion for the theater and his innate aesthetic sense allow him to materialize rich worlds in such diverse projects as hotels – W, restaurants – Nobu, airport terminals, hospitals, Broadway sets and trade show design (Venice Biennale). Last November, David Rockwell decided to dedicate a book to the question that most unleashes the full scope of his creativity: What if? He will speak about the book in a highly awaited lecture, along with Cindy Allen, the influential editor of Interior Design magazine. Dining, exploring, having fun, getting together to live better… both experts will invite their audience to discover the driving, creative force of a primarily hedonistic lifestyle.
DROR BENSHETRIT Lecture: “Dreams”
Tuesday, 5/12 from 3pm to 3:45pm
In which the Israeli-American designer conjures the power of dreams in design. Trained at the Design Academy Eindhoven in the Netherlands, in 2002 Dror Benshetrit founded Dror studio, a New York design studio specializing in the creation of innovative projects. His work is guided by a quest for the essence of movement, space and form. Materials, technology and geometry are called into question, tossed around, then transcended in order to give life to objects, architecture, decorative installations, and artistic worlds with their own particular DNA. The greatest names in retail have been seduced by his signature, such as Bentley, Alessi, Boffi, Bombay Sapphire, Cappellini, Kiehl’s, Levi’s, Lualdi, MaterialConneXion, Maya Romanoff, Marithé + François Girbaud, Puma, Rosenthal, Skins Footwear, Yigal Azrouël, SHVO, Swarovski, and Target. The winner of numerous international awards – GE Plastics Competition “Merging Boundaries” (2001), the iF Product Design Award (2006), the Good Design Award (2008, 2010) – the work of Dror Benshetrit has already been included in the permanent collections of major museums in North America, Europe and the Middle East.
